9 Things Worth Checking Before Committing to Any Proxy Provider

Picking the wrong proxy provider is an expensive mistake — not just in money, but in the hours spent debugging blocks, chasing support, and migrating to a different solution mid-project.

Most buying decisions in this space happen too fast. Teams see a low per-GB rate, sign up, and only discover the gaps after the first major scraping run hits a wall.

Here's what to actually evaluate before choosing.

1. IP Pool Size — But Check the Quality Too

A large pool number means nothing if the IPs are burned. Providers with 50M+ fresh residential addresses and regular pool rotation are in a different class from those recycling flagged IPs.

Ask: What's the average fraud score on their residential pool? Low fraud scores mean cleaner access and fewer blocks.

2. Pricing Transparency

Hidden fees are common. Some providers charge separately for features like ASN targeting, ISP selection, or sticky sessions. Read what's included in the base rate and what triggers add-on costs.

When Evomi launched its Core Residential plan at $0.49/GB, it sat at one of the lowest published rates in the market — but what matters is knowing what that rate actually covers before signing up.

3. Free Trial Availability

Any provider confident in their product should offer a trial with no upfront commitment. If a free trial doesn't exist—or is hidden behind a sales call—that says something.

Look for trials where the checkout total is $0.00 and no credit card charge fires immediately. That's a genuine trial.

4. Protocol Support

HTTP and HTTPS are the baseline. SOCKS5 matters for developers working with tools that need lower-level socket access. UDP and QUIC support (relevant for HTTP/3 and certain automation tasks) is rare but valuable for specific use cases.

5. Session Control Options

Different tasks need different session behaviour:

  • Rotating sessions — new IP on every request, best for large-scale scraping

  • Sticky sessions — same IP held for a defined window (check if the max is 30 minutes or 120+)

  • Persistent sessions — fixed IP indefinitely, needed for account management

Confirm that all three modes are available and can be configured directly via the endpoint parameters.

6. Geographic Coverage and Targeting Depth

Country-level targeting is table stakes. City-level targeting, ASN targeting, and ISP selection add precision for localized data tasks. Check whether these are included in the base plan or gated behind a higher pricing tier.

7. Money-Back Guarantee Terms

Refund policies in this space are often vague. Specific terms matter—for example, a guarantee that applies if less than 1GB or 10% of the plan has been consumed is a meaningful backstop. A vague "satisfaction guarantee" isn't.

8. Uptime and Support Response Time

A provider claiming 99.9% uptime needs to back it with a real SLA. On support, check average response times — both for first-contact (AI or automated) and for escalation to a human agent. There's a significant difference between a 15-minute response and a 4-hour ticket queue.

9. Compliance and Ethical Sourcing

This is the one most buyers skip until a legal or compliance team flags it. How were the residential IPs acquired? Is there a stated policy on user consent? Are terms of service enforced to prevent abuse of the network?

Evomi operates in accordance with Swiss data protection standards and holds six compliance certifications—an important detail for teams working in regulated industries or handling sensitive research tasks. Ethical sourcing isn't just a values statement; it affects the quality and cleanliness of the IP pool itself.

A Simple Framework

Before finalizing any provider:

  1. Run the free trial on actual target sites

  2. Stress test sticky sessions at the max window

  3. Verify that city-level targeting works in the regions needed

  4. Read the refund terms word for word

The providers that hold up through all four steps are a much shorter list than the ones with polished landing pages.
